Car & Truck Interior Door Handles for Toyota Sienna

Minivans are great for young families, offering plenty of space and passenger seating for children, pets, groceries, and sporting gear. With care and regular maintenance, your minivan may have a long life that lasts during the time your children are growing up. The wear and tear of daily life on a minivan may cause certain parts to break down and need replacement, such as door handles; if this happens, you can likely swap the necessary parts with new ones by using a few tools most people have at home.

Are interior and exterior door handles installed together?

While both the inside and outside door handles function as a complementary unit by engaging shared mechanical parts in the interior of your door to open, shut, and lock the door, you may not need to fix both at the same time when you notice that one of your door handles – inside or outside – is malfunctioning.

When you are faced with a door handle that will not engage or properly function, you must first determine the underlying cause. Some common problems include the following:

  • The inside door handle or exterior door handle is broken, missing a piece, or has been stripped off of the vehicle. If this is due to age or usage, you will likely be fine with a new door handle installed. If the vehicle was in any sort of traffic accident that impacted this area of the car, you may also have mechanical parts in the interior of the door that will need to be checked for damage and potential replacement.
  • The interior handle and outside door handle are intact and functional but the door will not latch or lock. This is a mechanical problem, not a door handle problem. If your vehicle has power locks, be sure to check the electrical system.
How do you replace a door handle?

To install an interior door handle, you will need both a Phillips head and a flat head screwdriver. Using the flat head screwdriver as a wedge, gently pop the inside door panel from the frame of the door. There may be clips that hold the door panel in place; be sure to keep track of those if they come loose.

Using the Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew the existing door handle from its mounting brackets after disengaging the handle wires that attach it to the interior door pull system mechanism. Remove the door handle and replace with the new handle, attaching the handle wires and screwing it into the mounting bracket. Re-install the door panel by lining up the clips to the receiving holes on the door frame and applying gentle pressure until the clips snap into the holes.

Are there universal door handles?

For some older model Toyota Siennas built before power locking was a standard feature, there are universal door handles available that fit a broad range of vehicle makes and models. For more recent makes of minivans, the door handles should be checked for a part number to use when purchasing replacements.
