Things to Know About Sharp TV Main Boards

Sharp TVs have made their way into many homes over the decades. No matter how well a television is made, it might eventually need a repair. Replacement parts and new main boards are essential to many of those repairs.

How do you know which board to get?

Identifying the correct replacement for your Sharp TV is a matter of matching its model number and/or serial number to compatible TV models. Every main board has a sticker with a pair of serialized identification numbers. See the manufacturer site for details.

  1. Find a board that is listed for your TV.
  2. Identify the serial numbers on the sticker on the board.
  3. Contact Sharp and verify that the serial number is compatible with your television.
What types of TV boards are available?

For most TV brands and models, there are six different boards that may be in use. The main board (also called a motherboard), is the main electronic component and one of the largest boards in a TV. It contains a tuner, HDMI, USB, and S-video port, and all of the audio and video runs through it. It converts analog video signals into digital ones that can be sent via low-voltage differential signals to the T-con or timing control board. The power supply board converts the AC line voltage to lower voltages needed to operate your TV. The backlight inverter board works much like a battery for the LCD monitor. There are also x-sustain, y-sustain boards, and buffer boards for plasma TVs. You can verify that the board in question is a main board by identifying audio and visual input/output somewhere along the outside edge of the unit.

How do you know you need a new main board?

Identifying problems with a TV can be tricky. The most reliable answer is to get a professional to diagnose the issue. If that isn't possible or you want a second opinion, there are a few symptoms that likely point to main-board issues. If you can see that the television is receiving power but is having problems with the picture or sounds, the issue is usually with the motherboard. Some T-con board issues can be similar to those involving the main board. Because it is the central control unit for the whole TV, the main board can impact virtually any aspect of the set's functionality.

Does a Sharp TV need a special brand of board?

Sharp contracts manufacturers for their main boards, so in a manner of speaking, all boards are third-party. Because of that, you do not need a particular brand or stamp on the motherboard. You only need to be able to verify that the board is compatible with your specific Sharp television model.
