What is a vacuum tube?

A vacuum tube contains a cathode that is heated by separate filaments. When the cathode is heated, it will release a cloud of negatively charged electrons that will attach to a plate housed above the cathode. The resulting 'vacuum' allows for high power outputs at lower power consumption. In essence, a vacuum amplifies electrical power. How does a vacuum tube improve sound quality?

Vacuum tubes were initially used in microwaves and radios. When the cathode passes its negatively charged electrons to the plate, the plate is heated and thermionic emission occurs. The tube surpasses the transistor in its ability to effectively 'burn off' electrons, and thus saves it from overheating while retaining the same amplification properties. Can you install a vacuum tube on your own?

Vacuum tubes aren't complicated to install. It is more important to focus on selecting the proper tube for the application. Most tubes will have an indicator on the glass envelope that will line up with an indicator on the electronic. The tube is then simply inserted into the housing. Radiant heat from the electron transmission will pass through the glass envelope.

How do vacuum tubes work?

Vacuum tubes have a rugged design and an ability to burn off excess energy. As electrons move between the cathode and plate, excess heat is transmitted through the glass envelope.
