Reliable SATA Male to eSATA Male Drive Cables and Adapters

SATA male to eSATA male drive cables and adapters allow you to connect your device to an external storage device. These products come in a variety of cable lengths and colors from a number of different brands. These cables and adapters are also available unbranded.

What is SATA?

SATA stands for serial ATA or serial AT attachment. This is the computer bus interface that will allow you to connect your computer bus to a storage device via a SATA cable. This storage device can be a mass storage product such as a solid-state drive (SSD), optical drive, hard disk drive, or some other hard drive device. SATA cables are designed for faster data transfer than the predecessor, Parallel ATA (PATA). SATA offers various speeds according to the revision version used. The data transfer speeds are measured in gigabytes per second (Gbit/s). Listings for cables will have the data transfer speed specified in the product title or description. Below is a select list of revision versions and their corresponding data transfer speeds:

  • SATA Revision 1.0: Data transfer speed at 1.5 Gbit/s. Released in January, 2003.
  • SATA Revision 2.0: Data transfer speed at 3 Gbit/s. Released in April, 2004.
  • SATA Revision 3.0: Data transfer speed at 6 Gbit/s. Released in July, 2008.
  • SATA Revision 3.2: Data transfer speed at 16 Gbit/s. Released in August, 2013.
What is eSATA?

eSATA stands for external serial advanced technology attachment. eSATA is an external interface for SATA compatible devices. eSATA is a competitor to Universal Serial Bus 2.0 (USB) and Firewire 400 for providing fast data transfer speeds to external storage products. An eSATA cable can measure up to 2 meters in length and is narrower than parallel cables, which are only available at 18 inches in length. Additionally, eSATA cables can provide up to triple the data transfer speed of Universal Serial Bus 2.0 (USB) and Firewire 400. eSATA does not have to translate data between the computer and the interface, resulting in less strain on the computer processors resources. If your desktop does not have an internal eSATA connector, you can purchase an internal peripheral component interconnect (PCI) card, which can provide an eSATA interface.

What does "male" mean?

Connectors, found at the end of cables and on adapters, can either be male or female. A male connector, on a cable or adapter, will have its pins protrude from the connector, while a female connector will have its pins depressed into the interface. With this cable product, both interface pins will be male. That means that your computer and your storage device must both have a female interface to ensure compatibility. It is recommended that you check both of your devices to be sure that they each have a female interface.
