Rolex introduced this steel watch in 2007 and continued to produce it until 2019. It's one of the newer additions to the long-standing GMT-Master II line. The original GMT-Master watch came out in 1954, offering pilots, travelers, and aviation professionals an opportunity to track two different time zones. In 1983, the GMT-Master II Rolex stainless steel watch introduced an independent 24-hour hand that allowed wearers to track three time zones.

Ref 116710LN came several years after Rolex celebrated the GMT-Master's 50th anniversary. It introduced many new features that would become standard on Rolex stainless steel watches.

At first glance, Ref 116710LN looks similar to the GMT-Master watches of the past. However, it has new design features that make it stand apart.

The most notable is the introduction of the new Super case. Also known as the Maxi case, the new Rolex case has a chunkier profile than its predecessors. It maintains the 40-millimeter diameter, but subtle design changes like heftier lugs and crown guards give it a commanding presence on your wrist.

Rolex also introduced the new Maxi dial. Ref 116710LN wasn't the first to get the Maxi dial and case, but it's the first widely available model to get them. The new dial is larger, and the luminous index markings are more prominent, improving readability.

A Mix of Old and New

The subtle new design elements of this Rolex GMT Master II keep the heritage of the GMT-Master line alive. It has the classic black dial with lume markers surrounded in white gold. There's also the signature Mercedes-style hour hand.

One unique addition to Ref 116710LN is the green GMT hand. The 24-hour hand is a staple for the GMT-Master collection. However, in previous models, it was red. Like previous Rolex GMT Master II watches, this model has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal face and Cyclops lens to magnify the date.

Another subtle change is the bezel. In addition to being wide to accommodate the Maxi case, Ref 116710LN has the distinction of being the first GMT Rolex stainless steel watch to have the new Cerachrom bezel. Rolex replaced the old aluminum bezel insert with a proprietary ceramic-like material. It's more resistant to scratches, corrosion, and fading caused by sunlight.

A Mix of Old and New

Powering this watch is the new Caliber 3186 movement. It's virtually identical to Rolex's previous movement in the GMT-Master II line. However, it adds a few new additions. These include the now-standard Parachrom hairspring that offers better resistance to shock and temperature changes. It's also sporting an updated jump-hour mechanism.
