Pontiac Vibe Parking Brake Cables

Every Pontiac Vibe model year seats five, and the parking brake offers added protection for cargo and people. From the cables to the discs or pads, its important to keep this safety feature in good repair. With a wide selection of Pontiac Vibe parking brake cables, you can find what you need for repair.

How does the Pontiac Vibe emergency braking system work?

The emergency braking system is a secondary system that provides additional safety when cars are parked. It also acts as a backup if the regular braking system in your Vibe fails. No matter if the vehicle is an AWD, front-wheel drive, or 4WD, the parking brake cable bypasses the hydraulic system and connects to the rear drums or discs.

When the rear uses a drum model, the e-brake cable pulls on the shoes, causing them to compress and stop tire rotation. With manual braking systems, this is done when the pedal is pressed or lever pulled. In an electronic e-brake system, theres an engine that activates the cable. If the rear tires use discs, there may be a drum installed inside the rear rotor, which is activated by the e-brake cable. When there is no interior drum, the e-brake is attached to a caliper that uses a corkscrew motion to compress the discs and stop the car. In an emergency situation, the e-brake should always be deployed with steady pressure, not with a stomp on the pedal or by jerking the lever.

When is the right time to use the Vibe’s e-brake?

As long as your Vibe is able to stop safely with the primary system, the emergency system should only be used for parking. The most appropriate use is when cars are parked on steep inclines and in cars with manual transmissions, which have a tendency to roll.

How long do the e-brake cables last on a Pontiac?

Because they experience less wear than the primary Pontiac braking system, e-brake cables should last for up to 10 years or 145,000 miles. In areas where icy roads make salting necessary, its important to avoid corrosion from salt spray by regularly washing the underside of your vehicle.

How do you replace e-brake cables in a Pontiac Vibe?

You can remove and replace the rear cables yourself if you have space to work, a jack, jack stands, and a standard ratchet set.

  1. Jack up your Pontiac Vibe and place the jack stands.
  2. Remove the flange bolts from the exhaust from mid-pipe down to the muffler.
  3. Slide the exhaust to the side to access the gas tank area.
  4. Loosen the bolts to remove the metal skid plate that shields the gas tank
  5. Remove the bolt holding the heat shield in place and remove the shield.
  6. Now you can view the equalizer underneath where the heat shield was located. This houses the rear cables.
  7. Remove the bolt that holds the cables to the chassis and the bolt that connects them to the backing plate on the drum or discs. The cables should come right off.
  8. Reverse the process to install new cables.
