Honda Goldwing 1000 Exhaust Systems to Customize Your Classic Touring Bike

One of the most common modifications a rider can make on his motorcycle is changing out the exhaust. This subsystem is a crucial part of the whole system that powers your bike. Replacing the stock exhaust can even add performance to your motorcycle, and these pipes are available in different styles and finishes, including stainless steel, anodized metals, and chrome.

What Is an Exhaust System?

  • Conveys Gases: a motorcycle exhaust is a combination of components that route the byproducts of the combustion cycle into the environment and away from the system. The system conveys the burnt gases from the engine from the combustion chamber.
  • Muffles Noise: An exhaust also plays a large part in mitigating the noise produced from the combustion process. Pipes fit for the GL1000 have bends along the portion of the pipes that run from the ports of the engine. These could fork in through manifolds and pass through muffler assemblies which help drastically reduce the noise output of the engine. The muffler contains a series of chambers and perforations that help cancel the thousands of sound bursts per minute that emit from the engine.

What Aspects of an Exhaust System Must I Consider?

  • Note or Sound: Different pipes and systems have their own particular note or sound. These can range from deep rumbling to higher-pitched waves that sound like rattling. On the GL1000, lower muffled but rich notes are ideal for this touring bike because it is made for long rides. Lower rumbling sounds may get uncomfortable at long periods, so bear that in mind when choosing a new exhaust.
  • Backpressure: This is a phenomenon in engineering that describes the loss of efficiency because of opposing pressure coming from the pipe. If you want to boost performance and fuel efficiency at the cost of muffling the noise, choose a system or pipes which reduce the likelihood of producing back pressure. Choose pipe systems that do not have catalytic converters. These reduce restrict the airflow on your GL1000 but release more emissions as a consequence.

What Types of Exhaust Replacements Are Available?

  • Full System: These require more effort as your system will work more efficiently, so the fuel and air ratio is out of alignment because your engine is getting more air than before while still getting the same amount of fuel.
  • Slip-On: As a subject of many an argument, slip-on GL1000 exhausts are a type of modification that is easier to do than a full system replacement but also has fewer performance benefits. These are simply steel or chrome tailpipes you can fit into your pipes to add more flair to your bike. While they look good, they don't increase horsepower. The improvement comes from the reduced weight of the tailpipes, which translate into increased performance.
