How to Put Some Drive in Your Lawn

Any time you have an engine, you need a way to get power from the engine in order to do work. With many lawnmowers, that means you need belts.

Where Do Lawn Mowers Use Belts?

When you look at standard lawn mowers, there are two things you expect the motor to do: it has to turn the blades, and optionally drive the wheels:

  • Deck Belts: these belts connect the blades to the engine. While you could run the blades directly from the motor, it is safer to have them connected indirectly so that if it stops suddenly the engine doesn't have to. Direct drive is usually for trimmers and mulching machines which rely on strings to cut grass.
  • Drive Belts: Many lawn mowers provide assistance so you don't have to struggle to push them over wet grass. Drive belts connect the tires to the engine so you can slip them into gear in order to take the worst of the effort out of your hands.

How Do You Change a Belt?

The one issue with belts, regardless of manufacturer, is that they wear out and you have to replace them. This holds true for any moving part on a mower or other machine. While there are differences between mowers and tractors, they both use belts under the cutting deck to drive the blade. In order to change blades, you simply need to follow a few simple steps:

  • Make Sure You Have the Right Belt: The wrong replacement belt will not work, and at worst damage either itself or the lawn mower. Always double check the model number of both the tractor and the part to make sure you have the right one before you tear the machine down.
  • Turn off the Lawn Mower: Never work on a mower with the engine running. For push machines, you should drain the fuel and disconnect the spark plug, while for riding machines you should remove the key and put it in your pocket.
  • Access the Deck: For push models, you can often simply put it on its side to access the deck drive belt; with something like an MTD riding mower you can't tip it over, but you can lower the deck to access the v-belt.
  • Release the Tension: All belts work under tension, so the first thing to do is release it. This may involve undoing bolts or removing the pulley from the spindle, depending on the machine in question. Always double check the part number against the model number of your machine before replacing a belt.
  • Reverse the Process: Once the new belt is in place, carefully adjust the tension and then put the parts back together, being very careful to ensure it is properly tensioned before completing the job.

Cutting the Grass

Taking care to replace lawn mower parts before they fail is not a matter of putting the cart before the hose, but simply good sense. Parts wear out with use, but if you can put a replacement in place before it fails you can avoid a cascade failure where one part's failure causes other parts to fail as a result. Keeping ahead of replacements for everything from MTD belts to oil filters can keep your lawn looking good all summer.
