Fuel Pumps for Toyota Corolla

Improve your fuel economy and keep your Toyota running smoothly with a replacement fuel pump. Finding the right replacement parts is essential to maintaining your Toyota Corolla.

How do you know your fuel pump needs replacement?

Several issues may indicate it is time to replace the pump in your Toyota Corolla. Look for the following warning signs of a pump failure in your vehicle:

  • Sputtering: If the vehicle’s engine coughs or sputters when it should be running smoothly, this could indicate issues with the pump’s performance.
  • Running hot: If the engine begins running hot and other common causes of overheating are not to blame, it could be a problem with the pump.
  • Loss of power: If the Corolla experiences a loss of power when accelerating, this could be a sign the pump isn’t moving enough gas to the engine.
  • Poor fuel economy: If your Toyota Corolla’s fuel economy has taken a turn for the worse, this could be due to problems with the pump.
  • Low pressure: If your gauges indicate low pressure, this could be a sign the pump isn’t getting enough gas to the engine.
  • Corolla won’t start: If your Toyota won’t start at all, this could indicate the pump has failed completely.
How do you replace a Toyota Corolla fuel pump?

Replacing the pump is a fairly simple process for most models of the Toyota Corolla sedan. You will need a socket wrench, a torque wrench, and a replacement pump or pump kit to complete the replacement process. Take the following steps to replace the pump:

  • Relieve pressure from the system and disconnect the battery before beginning.
  • Remove the rear seat in the sedan and open the service panel underneath it.
  • Disconnect the bolts that hold the pump assembly to the Corolla’s fuel tank set plate.
  • Unhook the sender, electrical connector, and outlet and return tubes from the pump and pump bracket.
  • Pull the bracket loose from the fuel tank and remove the hose and rubber piece attached to the pump.
  • Disconnect the filter from the pump by removing the small clip.
  • Reverse the process to install the new pump. If you are using a pump kit, replace the existing parts with the pieces from the kit.
  • Finish the process by attaching the final bolts to the Corolla’s fuel tank set plate and tightening them to 30 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.
