Honda Odyssey Fuel Pumps

Your Honda Odyssey depends on its fuel pump to move gasoline from the fuel tank to its motor. A faulty pump can cause it to run poorly or not at all. You can find the right pump for your Honda Odyssey and learn more here.

How does the fuel pump work?

The Honda Odyssey’s fuel pump is mounted on top of the gas tank and sits inside the tank. It draws fuel out of the gas tank and pumps it into the fuel line of the engine. The fuel pump also has a level float that measures how much gasoline is in the tank.

What types of fuel pumps are there?

There are three common styles of fuel pump found in Honda vehicles.

  • Fuel tank pump: This is the type of fuel pump used in the Honda Odyssey. The pump is fitted directly in the fuel tank and sends gasoline to the motor from there. These pumps are electric.
  • Inline pumps: These electric pumps are often mounted somewhere in the engine compartment. They are called inline pumps because they are placed somewhere along the fuel line, between the motor and the fuel tank.
  • Mechanical pumps: These are legacy pumps from the days of carburetors. The pump is usually mounted near the carburetor and cranked by the motor as it turns. This mechanical action creates the suction that draws the fuel from the gas tank and sprays it into the carburetor.
What causes a fuel pump to become faulty?

Fuel pumps are long lasting and reliable, but there are a few common reasons for them to fail.

  • Lack of power: Often when an electric pump like the Odyssey’s stops working properly, it’s because an electrical problem is preventing it from getting power. It could be a blown fuse, a corroded or frayed wire, or a loose cable connection. It’s important to rule out these possibilities before replacing the pump.
  • Clogging: If foreign matter like dirt or rust gets into the gas tank, it will be drawn up into the pump’s filters that stop it from reaching the motor. Too much of this foreign matter, though, can clog the fuel pump to the point that its ability to draw fuel from the tank is restricted.
  • Normal wear: Fuel pumps are long-lasting, but wear and tear can cause them to weaken or stop working altogether.
What symptoms does a failing fuel pump show?
  • Rough running engine: When a fuel pump weakens, you may notice problems when the greatest demand for fuel happens at high speeds on the freeway. Your Honda minivan may run poorly seemingly at random, jerking and misfiring when accelerating on the highway. If the fuel pump gets worse, these problems may happen when driving at slower speeds or even while idling.
  • Loss of fuel efficiency: If you notice your Odyssey is getting fewer MPG as you drive or that its getting progressively worse, it may be the fuel pump leaking or not providing the right amount of fuel to the engine.
