Fender Guitar Saddles

Fender is a foremost name in the music industry. It manufactures acoustic and electric guitars, amplifiers, electronics, and other accessories. Also available, Fender guitar saddles are convenient and quality options for when you need to change them out. While both electric and acoustic guitars have saddles, the variant that needs changing out most frequently is those of acoustic models because they are made of softer material than the steel used in their electric brethren. You can find most Fender parts on eBay.

Why Adjust or Change the Saddles?

  • Adjusting Action: The action describes the distance between the string and the fretboard. The saddle can also determine string spacing. The higher the action, the more effort is required to press the strings down on the fretboard to get the desired chord and intonation. It controls the action because the strings rest against it, so picking one with a shorter height will lower the action setting if needed.
  • Saddle Wear: Acoustic guitar saddles are more prone to wear than steel variants in an electric guitar because the strings constantly rub hard against the material, eventually wearing it down. This can cause uneven string height over time and affects sound quality and comfort.

Materials

  • Plastic: The most common material in acoustic saddles is plastic. It is the cheaper option and the default material for most manufactured guitars. Plastic wears easily and may need changing more frequently.
  • Bone: Genuine Fender bone saddles require changing less frequently than plastic options but are a little more expensive. Those made of bone also impart a vintage look upon closer inspection.
  • Metal Saddles: These are fastened onto the bridge of an electric guitar. Adjusting the intonation screws changes the instruments intonation to get accurate sound. Fender offers nickel-plated bridge saddles for added style.

What Are Some Important Considerations for an Acoustic Guitar Saddle?

  • Compensated Saddles: Some arent totally level on the top. There may be grooves called compensations on one end, and their purpose is to set the string height of the first and/or second strings closer to the frets.
  • Dimensions: Typical heights range from 72 to 76 mm, while the width is typically at 3 mm and height ranges between 7 to 10 mm. Dont worry about getting the exact height out of the box. You can easily adjust the dimensions to your preference by using a sanding block to rub away the material from the bottom of the saddle. Just make sure that the block is level as you sand.
