Pontiac G5 Exhaust Systems to Put the Beast Back in Your Coupe

Exhaust systems play an important role in not only reducing the emissions of your Pontiac G5 engine but also increasing its performance. While your stock exhaust system may do the job nicely, when it comes to squeezing out some extra horsepower out of your machine, you will generally want an aftermarket exhaust. And contrary to popular belief, they are actually easy to replace on your own with common and simple hand tools.

What Is an Automotive Exhaust System?

  • Gas Conveyance: The exhaust starts at the exhaust manifold that fits into the exhaust ports in your vehicles engine. This is where the byproducts from the combustion process are pumped out, and it is the systems job to convey gasses out into the atmosphere.
  • Catalytic Converter: This part is found along the exhaust pipes right after the exhaust manifold. A catalytic converter, which is composed of thousands of small ducts made of platinum, rhodium, and palladium, has the role of reducing the amount of toxic gasses released into the environment by a series of chemical reactions that change toxic gases into relatively harmless gases, including carbon dioxide.
  • Mufflers: Mufflers are there to reduce the noise coming out of the engine. They do this via a series of chambers that break up the sound waves produced by the thousands of explosions per minute generated by your Pontiac G5 engine.

What Types Are Available?

  • Full Exhaust Systems: These systems are the most expensive but also the most effective setups. They consist of all the pipings from the manifold down to the exhaust tips. This includes the catalytic converter and the muffler. You can get parts that convert a single exhaust system into a dual exhaust system to make your car even sportier.
  • Exhaust Tips: Exhaust tips are generally there for aesthetic purposes. Most times, stock exhaust pipes look plain. To add an aggressive look to your car, fit in anodized tips with a gradient color or get a black anodized tip for a subtle but menacing look.

What Tools Will I Need?

  • Exhaust Clamps: These help to connect the different parts that make up the exhaust system. They are steel clamps that can be tightened via a spring clip. It is important to use them to maintain an airtight seal in the connections to ensure efficient exhaust operation.
  • Hand Tools: Hand tools such as screwdrivers and a ratchet set are really all you need to replace an exhaust system.
  • Jack and Stands: Jack your vehicle up so you can access the exhaust, and then use jack stands to prop it up securely. You then need a jack to lift the exhaust system to prevent damage to it.
