Ford Explorer Complete Engines

Ford Explorer parts fit Ford vehicles ranging from the Explorer XLS to the Sport to the Limited, in front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive options. As a Ford product, Ford Explorer complete engines are often also compatible with the Mercury Mountaineer, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda Navajo, Ford Ranger, Mazda B-Series, and other Ford vehicles.

What engines are available for the Ford Explorer?

Depending on the model year, several different types of powertrains are available for the Ford Explorer:

  • 1991-1994 Ford Explorer - For the 1991-1994 Ford model years, the only engine available was a 4.0L Cologne V6 with overhead valves, which made 155 horsepower. This could be mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
  • 1995-2001 Ford Explorer, 1995-2003 Ford Explorer Sport, and 2001-2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac - For the 1995-2001 model years, the aforementioned overhead valve Cologne V6 powertrain was still standard on all trims from the XLS to the Limited, but a single overhead cam Cologne V6 with 205 horsepower was made available in 1997 as well. This model of Explorer was also available with a 5.0L Windsor V8 that made 210 horsepower and was ideal for towing and heavy-duty use. This generation of Explorer was also available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
  • 2002-2010 Ford Explorer - The 2002-2005 Ford Explorer continued to come standard with a 4.0L single overhead cam Cologne V6 with 205 horsepower on all trims from the XLS to the Limited, but also offered a 239 horsepower, 4.6L V8. From 2006-2010, the fourth generation Ford Explorer offered the same choices though the powertrains were tweaked to generate more power.
  • 2011 Ford Explorer - The fifth generation Explorer was redesigned, and this is reflected in the available choices. The standard powertrain on this Ford is a 3.5L V6 engine with 290 horsepower. Higher trim levels were available with a fuel-efficient 2.0L or 2.3L four-cylinder making 240 or 280 horsepower. The 2.0L four-cylinder was only designed for front-wheel drive Explorers. A turbocharged 3.5L V6 making 365 horsepower was also available.
How do you install a Ford Explorer complete engine?

The first step is to remove the old engine from the Ford vehicle, typically by draining all fluids, disconnecting all wiring and all bolts to other parts of the vehicle, and then lifting it out of the vehicle. Using a cherry picker, you can then lower the new block into the vehicle and reattach everything.
