Colt Knives and Tools

While the Colt name is best known for firearms, the company also licensed its name out to produce knives under the same brand. Colt knives sought after for their style and quality with features like genuine bone handles on many knives. However, Colt dropped many of their external licenses after the company restructuring in 2015 and so Colt knives are becoming more and more desirable in the collectors market. Even if more people keep these blades in the boxes, those who don't can enjoy the use of a piece of metalwork designed not simply to look good but also to work well.

What Kind of Knives Did Colt Sell?

Where other weapons companies focused on the tactical market, Colt expanded into the hunting market with a focus on folding knives. Not only popular among hunters, they made pocket knives at a reasonable price point. Colt designs included the following:

  • Linerlock: Folding to 4 1/2 inches it features stainless steel with titanium accents on the handle. The edge is slightly curved and runs all the way to the tip.
  • Stilletto: A double-edged dagger with a black aluminum handle and a gold tone Colt emblem. Easy to carry, it is a useful backup weapon. Everything folds away safely out of sight.
  • Titanium Series Sowbelly Stockman: Featuring black bone handles and a titanium coated clip along with nickel bolsters. With three blades, this Colt knife adds spey and sheepsfoot blades.

How Do You Recognize a Colt Knife?

There are several different ways to recognize a Colt knife, especially the folding ones. While you can use the badges, sometimes that can be difficult when dealing with collectibles so it helps to know how the product is made so that you can make a more accurate judgment:

  • Materials: Many folding knives feature bone rather than micarta handles, and all Colt knives used the highest quality materials.
  • Blades: Colt used 440A stainless steel so that the knife is sharp right out of the box. Many knives also have a frosted edge on the master blade.

Collectible Colt Knives

While pocketknives have always been collectible, there are a number of features that make the Colt blades even more desirable than some of their competitors. Each knife came in its own display box featuring a magnetic clasp seal. This provides a great way to display the knife while still retaining its value. As condition often drives collectability, it's a great ideal to keep your knife in the box. You should also keep the holster or sheath with the blade to maximize its value. The price may be affordable one day, but as time passes, they are sure to increase in value. Note that the knives are almost always more collectible than the multi-tools.
