Motorcycle Carburetors and Parts for Yamaha XS750

Driving your Yamaha XS750 motorcycle over time will cause wear and tear on the components that keep your bike going. This will happen to your brakes, tires, headlights, and even your carburetor. If your XS750 motorcycle is experiencing backfiring, overheating, reduced performance, black clouds of exhaust smoke, or reduced power, then these signs might indicate that it is time to replace your carburetor.

How are carburetors put together?

The carburetor on your Yamaha XS750 motorcycle sits behind the air filter and regulates the mixture of air and fuel going into your engine. Its construction consists of these four components.

  • The float system acts as a reservoir and staging area for fuel about to go into the motor of your Yamaha motorcycle. Fuel flows through a valve from the tank down the fuel line and into the fuel chamber. The valve is connected to a float ball, which is connected to a pivot arm. When the level of fuel in the chamber drops, the ball sinks and the valve is opened. Once the ball rises again the valve is closed off.
  • The Venturi pipe is length of steel pipe that is kinked in the center. This causes the air that enters it to accelerate, causing a vacuum that will pull fuel out of the float chamber and into the motor of your Yamaha motorcycle.
  • The fuel jet on your XS750 bike is a calibrated opening allowing a regulated amount of fuel to exit the float chamber and enter into the motor. Fuel is sent into a well that air bleeds into, and baffles vaporize the fuel before it’s pulled into the Venturi pipe.
  • The throttle valve is controlled by regulating the amount of airflow moving through the Venturi pipe, and is located in the front of the pipe. It is also attached to the accelerator on your Yamaha XS750 and dictates how much power your bike’s engine will produce.
What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket carburetors?

When deciding on the carburetor you will purchase for your Yamaha XS750, you will have to choose between OEM, or Original Equipment Manufacturer, and aftermarket parts. The original manufacturer of your bike is Yamaha, and the parts made by them are specified to your XS750. However, there are also many third party companies that make parts that will fit not only your motorcycle, but other makes and models that are similar in design. You can compare the different carburetors available and figure out which one suits your needs.

How do your replace a carburetor?
  1. Detach the battery cables to avoid a potential fire hazard. Then remove the air filter assembly as well as the choke linkage, throttle, and fuel line from your XS750’s carburetor.
  2. Loosen up all the bolts and nuts connecting the carburetor to your bike and carefully remove it from the engine. Hold it level and steady to avoid spilling any fuel that might be inside it. Drain any fuel and remove the gasket from the intake manifold.
  3. Clean the gasket with a rag and install it and the new carburetor. Reattach everything to your XS750’s carburetor in the opposite order that you took it apart.
