Alternadores y generadores para Honda Prelude

Alternators & Generators for Honda Prelude

The alternator is the main energy generator for the sporty Honda Prelude. Without a properly functioning alternator, the battery can lose power quickly and leave the car inoperable. The alternator provides the power design for the spark plugs, radio, air conditioning, power brake mechanism and the other technology found on the Prelude model.

What does a Honda Prelude alternator do?

The alternator is the main electrical generator in the Honda. It is connected to the engine using a drive belt that transfers some of the engines energy to the alternator. Whenever the car is running, the alternator takes some of this energy and converts it into electrical energy that is then used to recharge the Preludes battery. Other electricity is funneled to the dashboard. Without this function, the battery will lose its charge and the electrical systems of the Honda Prelude Si will fail after a short time.

What are the signs of a problem with the alternator?Battery warning light: This steady light could indicate a problem with the battery or the generator. All parts of the generating system should be checked. Dim headlights or interior lights: Since the lights draw energy from the generator, they will generally get brighter when the engine is revved. If they are dimmer, it could be problem with the power supply. Squealing from the front of the car: In instances where the squealing gets louder with more electrical systems pulling power from the generator, there may be a problem with the alternator. Issues with starting and random stalls: The Honda needs electricity to run the starter as well as to provide the spark to the spark plugs. If the alternator is weakening, then these vehicle components, like timing, may struggle to function.

How is an alternator tested with a voltmeter?

The voltmeter provides a way to test the battery and alternator for power output. Begin with testing the battery and follow these steps.
  • With the car off, attach the voltmeter to the battery by placing the red lead on the positive battery terminal. Then place the black lead on the negative terminal.
  • Check the voltmeter. It should read above 12.2 volts.
  • If the reading is above 12.2, start the car to finish the alternator test.
  • If the reading is below 12.2, the battery may be the problem. If indicated, the function of the alternator should be tested.
  • Leaving the car running, rev the engine a few times.
  • Reattach the voltmeter to the battery as before. The voltage should read from 13 to a high of 14.5.
  • Turn on lights, AC, and radio.
  • If the reading stays in this range, the alternator motor is able to produce ample energy.
  • If the reading falls below 13, further investigation needs to occur.

How is a Honda Prelude alternator replaced?

  • Disconnect the alternator from the car battery, remove the negative terminal, and then the positive side.
  • Disconnect the 5-pin connector, and remove the ground.
  • Remove the alternator bolts.
  • Place the new alternator and reverse the steps.
