Things to Look for in Aiwa Home Audio Shelf Stereos

Aiwa has been producing home audio equipment for nearly 70 years. Many of their stereo systems and CD players feature changing decks that allow you to store multiple compact discs that you can swap out at your leisure. If you are looking for a home sound system, knowing some common dimensions, features, and playable media file formats of these stereo systems may help you narrow your search field and find the CD player that works for you.

What are some common features of shelf stereo systems?

The specific types and the number of features you get with your CD player or the home audio system will depend on which model you choose. However, you may wish to narrow your search by looking for shelf stereos that include a particular set of features. Some common features you may be able to find during your search include:

  • Number of speakers: These come in each model, and may include front, rear, center, and surround speakers.
  • Extra cables: To attach accessories to your stereo system.
  • Dials: To control functions relating to the CD player, tape deck, or digital audio formats.
  • Interface: To control stereo features such as volume, playback, or recording.
  • Additional features: Options include karaoke mode, sleep timer, or alarm clock.
  • Input jack: These enable you to use headphones.
What media and files can CD changer stereos play?

A stereo system with a CD deck and changer may be able to play more than one file type if that file is written to a compact disc. Some of the most common file formats that a stereo with CD support might be able to play include:

  • Regular CDs
  • CD+G file formats for karaoke
  • CD-R formats
  • CD-RW formats
  • ACC and MP3 files
How does a stereos CD changer work?

There are multiple types of CD changers in various kinds of audio equipment. However, most home stereo systems that include a CD changer use a horizontal carousel disc changer. Many horizontal changers will hold up to seven CDs. The basic inner workings of horizontal changers are as follows:

  1. The carousel must be loaded with CDs first. To load the carousel in your stereo, you will place each CD face down on a rotating tray.
  2. The carousel spins around to place the disc of your choice over the playing mechanism of the stereo.
  3. This mechanism rises to connect with and spin the CD as it plays it.
  4. If you want the stereo to switch to a different disc, the playing mechanism disengages from the playing CD and lowers itself.
  5. The platform will spin to the disc of your choice, and the mechanism will engage with and play the different disc.
