Ford Fusion ABS System Parts

Ford Fusion cars are equipped with an anti-lock braking system, also known as ABS. These systems keep Fusion drivers safe, providing them with better steering control. When the ABS light comes on, it may be a sign that its time to shop for ABS replacement parts or accessories.

What are anti-lock brakes?

When a driver presses down on the brakes, the anti-lock brake system uses wheel speed sensors to evaluate each individual wheel. If any wheel tries to lock up, ABS steps in and activates the nearby hydraulic valves, which reduces the wheels braking. This has a number of benefits. For one thing, it gives Ford Fusion drivers the ability to steer while driving in slick conditions as it prevents dangerous skidding.

What Ford Fusion parts make up an ABS system?

An ABS system is traditionally made up of a series of components that work in tandem to provide pulsing brake technology. Variations from one brake model to the next is typically based on slightly different specs for one of these components:

  • Speed Sensors: The speed sensors are responsible for gauging the speed of the tires. If a tire is close to the threshold speed, it can lock up, which minimizes the drivers control over the vehicle. When a tire reaches this speed, the sensors inform the rest of systems parts, which allows the ABS to take quick action. When outfitting a Ford Focus with speed sensors, drivers may need to get replacement parts for each wheel.
  • Speed Sensor Wiring Harness: The wiring harness is mounted onto the speed sensor.
  • Pumps: The ABS pumps regulate the pressure within the brakes. These parts are primarily responsible for restoring normal pressure levels after the ABS system is activated.
  • Valves: While the pumps regulate pressure, the valves decide what amount of pressure needs to be released. Depending on the braking scenario, these parts may allow full pressure, partial pressure, or no pressure. They do this by connecting the Ford Fusions master cylinder to the braking system.
  • Controller: The controller is responsible for sending and receiving messages. It receives the braking information from the sensors, interprets it, and sends that information to the pumps and valves.
What type of anti-brake system is standard on the Fusion?

There are four types of anti-brake system configurations: four-channel, three-channel, two-channel, and one-channel. Most Ford Fusion models are equipped with a four-channel anti-brake system, which means that they have speed sensors and valves and on all four wheels. This optimizes the Fusions performance and steering control.
