GMC Yukon A/C Hoses and Fittings

Keeping the air conditioning system in your Yukon well maintained ensures that you will enjoy a cool and comfortable ride. Like many components in your engine bay, the AC hoses are often exposed to high heat levels and are susceptible to damage. Knowing how to diagnose AC hose problems lets you fix them before they affect your entire AC system.

The most common problems you will find in Yukon AC systems are compressor problems and hose leaks. Start by identifying what your AC is and is not doing well. It either does not come on at all, or it does not blow cold air when engaged. If it does not come on at all, you will want to check the compressor and fuses for proper functioning. If it only blows lukewarm or cool air, it is time to check the hoses for leaks.

There are two ways to check for AC leaks in your GMC Yukon. You can use a leak detection kit or you can visually inspect the parts and components in your SUV. If the system pressure is extremely low, proceed with a visual inspection, looking specifically for:

• Loose, broken or missing fittings.
• Damaged seals and o-rings at the pressure switch of the condenser.
• Rips and tears where the hoses meet and are crimped onto the fittings.
• Holes or damage to the hose manifolds.
• Condensation, dripping, or any obvious signs of leaks.

If you are not getting cold air when you turn on the AC in your Yukon, you may have a low-pressure air conditioning hose leak. The low-pressure line is the large AC hose that transports refrigerant back into the compressor. The refrigerant passing through the low-pressure side is in a gaseous state. To determine if there is a leak in the line, check for a greasy or oily film on the low-pressure hose and around the fittings. Look for rips, tears, or pinholes that could allow the gases to escape. Also look for kinks in the hose that could prevent the refrigerant from passing through to the compressor correctly.

Low refrigerant levels can cause your entire AC system to fail. If you find that you need to replenish the AC refrigerant in your GMC Yukon too often, you may have a high-pressure AC hose leak. The high-pressure line is the small AC hose that carries liquid refrigerant from the compressor to the receiver dryer where it converts into the cold air. Look for traces of coolant dripping from the high-pressure hose or leaking around the fittings. Even a minor leak can cause your SUV to lose refrigerant quickly. Since the high-pressure line is exposed to high heat from the engine components, check for physical damage to the hose. In addition to checking for cracks, tears, and holes, also look for signs of warping or heat damage along the high-pressure AC hose. Also, check the fittings and connections for loose threads or damage where the hose and fittings connect.
